Whole Mars Catalog

Omar Qazi’s public commentary spans local language-model inference and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system.

Omar Qazi, identified in Latent Space as Whole Mars Catalog, has discussed the possibilities of running language models on personal devices. Ride AI’s speaker biography describes him as a software engineer and the founder of Whole Mars Catalog.[1][2]

Language models on laptops and phones

In the Llama 2 discussion published July 19, 2023, Qazi welcomed the model’s commercial license and highlighted the prospect of “running it on your laptop or even your smartphone.” He singled out a seven-billion-parameter model and asked what new applications might become possible.[1]

Responding to Qazi, Simon Willison described running a seven-billion-parameter model offline on his iPhone for brainstorming names and suggested combining small phone models with retrieval augmented generation or tool use.[1]

Qazi also appeared on Farzad Mesbahi’s podcast in an episode published July 19, 2023, titled “Tesla FSD, Q1 2023 Earnings Preview with Omar Qazi of Whole Mars Catalog”.[4]

Earlier history: the Whole Mars account

The Whole Mars name has an account history predating Qazi’s 2023 podcast appearances. In an account published October 6, 2020, Scott Woods wrote: “I created the @WholeMarsBlog Twitter account.” Woods’s account-creation claim is distinct from Qazi’s identification as Whole Mars Catalog in the later discussions.[3][1][4]
