Victor Powell

Crixet founder whose software became Prism at OpenAI, with earlier work making technical ideas understandable through interactive visualization.

Victor Powell is a software engineer and the founder of Crixet, which became Prism, an AI workspace for scientific writing and collaboration at OpenAI. He announced the transition on January 27, 2026. NATEA Silicon Valley’s July 30, 2026 event listing identified him as a Member of Technical Staff at OpenAI and Crixet’s acquired founder.[2][3][4]

From Crixet to Prism

Powell marked the transition with a short announcement: “Extremely excited to announce Crixet is now Prism and a part of OpenAI”. In the launch post he shared, Kevin Weil described Prism as a free, AI-native workspace for scientists to write and collaborate on research, powered by GPT-5.2. At launch, it offered unlimited projects and collaborators to anyone with a ChatGPT account.[3]

A Latent Space interview published that day featured Powell alongside Weil, presented under the OpenAI for Science banner.[1]

Earlier work: explaining technical ideas visually

Before the Prism chapter, Powell’s work included interactive technical explanations. His personal website describes interests in visualization, mapping, computer graphics and developer infrastructure, and calls Explained Visually “an attempt to use visualization and interactivity to make complex ideas understandable.”[2][5]

The principal component analysis explanation credits Powell, with text by Lewis Lehe. It makes dimensionality reduction concrete: readers can drag two-dimensional points to see how principal-component axes adjust, then examine why retaining the component with the most variation preserves more of the dataset’s structure. A three-dimensional example compares the transformation to finding a camera angle, retaining the first two components and dropping the third, which has the least variation.[5]

The explanation then applies PCA to a 17-dimensional dataset of UK food consumption, showing how a lower-dimensional view reveals differences between countries. It credits the original example to Mark Richardson’s class notes. This progression—from movable points to a larger dataset—shows Powell’s explanatory work through a specific teaching artifact.[5]

Powell also lists Meta, Uber and Tesla as previous employers on his GitHub profile, where he uses the handle vicapow and lists the Explained Visually repository.[6]
