Paul Bakaus

Paul Bakaus works on AI-assisted interface design through Impeccable, with an emphasis on human judgment and a shared design vocabulary.

Paul Bakaus works on AI-assisted interface design through Impeccable, a toolkit that gives AI coding agents design guidance and users commands for directing their work. He presented the tool at the AI Engineer World’s Fair. In a July 2 interview with Latent Space, he argued that making agents more capable through “skill engineering” should preserve people’s involvement in the creative process.[1][2][4]

Human judgment in AI design

Bakaus made a concrete commitment about Impeccable’s direction in that interview: “There is no auto,” he said, “and there will be no auto.” This was his stated product intention in July 2026. On his personal site, he describes his broader priorities as making AI work beyond developers and “bringing curation and human judgment back to a web drowning in slop.”[2][7]

Impeccable gives users and agents a shared design vocabulary through commands such as polish, audit, critique, distill, animate, bolder, and quieter. Its README acknowledges Anthropic’s frontend-design skill as its starting point.[4]

The setup command, /impeccable init, records the product’s audience, purpose, operating context, constraints, voice, and evidence in PRODUCT.md. Later commands use this durable context while keeping product facts distinct from surface-level visual direction. Impeccable also combines deterministic checks with LLM-only critique checks; the CLI and browser extension run the deterministic rules without an LLM or API key.[4]

Earlier work: jQuery UI and Chrome DevTools

Before his AI design work, Bakaus worked on web interface and developer tooling. The official jQuery team record identifies him as jQuery UI’s creator and lists him among past team members. His career timeline records that he led product and developer relations for Chrome DevTools at Google from 2013 to 2016. These earlier roles provide context for his experience with interfaces and the tools developers use to build them.[6][5]
