NLW
Nathaniel Whittemore, known as NLW, combines daily AI analysis with practical education focused on how people use the technology at work.
Nathaniel Whittemore, known as NLW, is an AI commentator and educator associated with The AI Breakdown and The AI Daily Brief. His work includes technical interviews, analysis of AI competition, and practical tutorials for recurring workplace tasks. In February 2026, McKinsey identified him as founder and CEO of Superintelligent and host of AI Daily Brief.[1][2][4][5]
AI commentary and education, 2023–2024
Whittemore's AI media and education work was already taking shape in 2023–2024. In an August 2023 crossover, he joined Latent Space's swyx and Alessio for a discussion of Code Interpreter, Llama 2, AI agents, companions, and the emerging AI engineer profession. He invited them back for a conversation published in April 2024, examining competition across the AI stack and what developers were building.[1][2]
Whittemore helped disseminate Four Wars, a framework swyx devised to organize AI developments around data, GPU resources, multimodality, and retrieval-augmented generation and operations. Its written presentation, published in January 2024 by Noah Hein and Latent.Space, acknowledged his coverage and repeat invitation. In the April conversation with swyx and Alessio, Whittemore said he had devoted an episode to the framework and used it in a presentation for Intel's internal AI audience, crediting its creators. He also reported adding a category for competition among Big Tech companies.[2][3]
Whittemore treated developers' interests as an early indicator of where AI might go. In the April 2024 conversation, he argued that looking closely at what developers and entrepreneurs wanted to build could reveal developments before they reached the news. He also distinguished startup consolidation from declining technological importance: competition could eliminate companies without showing that AI was less consequential than anticipated.[2]
As founder and CEO of Superintelligent, Whittemore pursued practical AI education. The platform entered beta in December 2023 and launched publicly on April 10, 2024. It organized learning around short, three-to-seven-minute tutorials and companion step-by-step instructions. At launch, Whittemore argued that AI's effects would depend substantially on whether individuals had the learning resources to adapt.[6]
His emphasis was on applications tailored to a person's job or role. In the April 2024 conversation, Whittemore reported that his team had produced about 300 tutorials over the preceding months. He described using Midjourney every day for YouTube thumbnails as an example of adoption through repeated tasks. As he put it, AI “looks revolutionary because of a million small changes rather than one sort of big dramatic change.”[2]
Earlier media work: The Breakdown in 2019
Before these AI projects, Whittemore covered cryptocurrency through The Breakdown. CoinDesk introduced the show on December 12, 2019, describing a debut episode on cryptocurrency regulation, decentralized finance on a bitcoin sidechain, and Twitter's initiative to support or develop an open social-media protocol. This earlier work provides context for his later role explaining developments in another rapidly changing technology field.[7][1]
