Nicole Brichtova
Google DeepMind image-product leader associated with Nano Banana and Whisk, whose public views emphasize iteration and cultivated creative judgment.
Nicole Brichtova works on Google’s generative-media products, including Nano Banana. In August 2025, she was Google DeepMind’s Gemini Image Product Lead, helping introduce an image-editing upgrade focused on preserving likeness across edits. Her public commentary emphasizes the work that remains for people: refining outputs, judging quality and bringing creative expertise to model development.[2][1][4]
Nano Banana and iterative image editing
Brichtova coauthored the August 26, 2025 Gemini announcement with David Sharon, Multimodal Generation Lead for Gemini Apps. They explained the team’s focus on maintaining a character’s likeness from one image to the next: when editing familiar people, a depiction that is “close but not quite the same” does not feel right. The Nano Banana update was designed to preserve recognizable appearance while changing outfits, settings or other elements.[2]
Their announcement described multi-turn editing as changing selected parts of an image while preserving the rest—for example, starting with an empty room, painting the walls, then adding a bookshelf and furniture. It also stated that images created or edited in the Gemini app carried both a visible watermark and an invisible SynthID digital watermark.[2]
In a September 17, 2025 personal post, Brichtova shared an Unsupervised Learning interview with Oliver Wang about “how we built nano banana and where creativity tools are headed.” Host Jacob Effron’s accompanying account described her pushing back against the expectation that a simple prompt could deliver production-ready work. In his summary, even impressive social-media examples required substantial iteration; finished creative products still depended on workflows, multiple tools and human creativity.[4]
Creative expertise and model aesthetics
At an AI Engineer World’s Fair generative-media panel covered in Richard MacManus’s July 2, 2026 dispatch, Brichtova distinguished average preference from cultivated expertise: “Somebody who has honed a craft has a very different level of expertise,” she said. “You see things that the average human will not.”[1]
Discussing whose judgment shapes a model’s default aesthetic, Brichtova said, “It ends up being us,” and “It ends up being the modeling teams.” MacManus reported that she suggested closer collaboration with people who have “a really creative point of view,” giving creative specialists a role in shaping the results.[1]
Before the Nano Banana release, Brichtova’s work included Whisk, an image-prompting experiment. Its December 2024 introduction provides earlier context for her work on creative tools and their limits.[3]
Earlier work: Whisk in 2024
Brichtova, then identified as a Product Manager at Google DeepMind, coauthored the December 16, 2024 Whisk announcement with Thomas Iljic, Director of Product Management at Google Labs. Whisk accepted images specifying a subject, scene and style. Gemini generated detailed captions of those inputs, then passed the descriptions to Imagen 3 to create a new image.[3]
Iljic and Brichtova described Whisk as built for rapid visual exploration, rather than pixel-perfect editing. Because the workflow extracted selected characteristics instead of reproducing an input exactly, it could change important features such as hairstyle or skin tone. Users could inspect and edit the underlying prompts when the result missed those details—a concrete control for refining an imperfect interpretation.[3]
