Kevin Weil

Former OpenAI Chief Product Officer and science leader whose work included starting OpenAI for Science and leading the scientific workspace Prism.

Kevin Weil led product and science initiatives at OpenAI, moving from Chief Product Officer into the research team to start OpenAI for Science. He also led Prism, an AI workspace for scientists. He left OpenAI on April 17, 2026, as the science initiative was decentralized and Prism’s team moved under Codex leadership.[4][5]

Earlier product leadership and joining OpenAI

Before his work in AI for science, Weil was an early executive leading product at Instagram. OpenAI announced his appointment as Chief Product Officer on June 10, 2024. At OpenAI’s DevDay that year, he appeared with Sam Altman in the closing Q&A, included in Latent Space’s conference coverage.[5][4][2]

OpenAI for Science

In September 2025, Weil announced that he would start OpenAI for Science. He later described the transition as moving from Chief Product Officer to joining the research team and starting the initiative.[5]

Weil coauthored Early science acceleration experiments with GPT-5, submitted on November 20, 2025, with Sébastien Bubeck, Christian Coester, Ronen Eldan, Timothy Gowers, Yin Tat Lee, Alexandru Lupsasca, Mehtaab Sawhney, Robert Scherrer, Mark Sellke, Brian K. Spears, Derya Unutmaz, Steven Yin and Nikita Zhivotovskiy. The paper presents case studies across mathematics, physics, astronomy, computer science, biology and materials science, describing both acceleration and limitations. Its authors report four new mathematical results, carefully verified by human authors; the author list does not specify Weil’s individual contribution to those results.[7]

Prism supplied a concrete product focus for Weil’s science leadership. In its January 27, 2026 launch announcement, OpenAI described drafting and revising scientific papers with the full document as context, including surrounding text, equations, citations, figures and overall structure. Weil led the workspace effort; that leadership does not establish personal implementation of its features.[5][6]

On January 28, 2026, Latent Space identified Weil as OpenAI’s new VP for Science and attributed to him a forecast made the previous day: “2026 in AI for Science will look a lot like 2025 in AI for Software Engineering”.[1]

Departure and redistribution of the science work

On April 17, 2026, Weil announced his departure. WIRED quoted his social media statement: “Today is my last day at OpenAI, as OpenAI for Science is being decentralized into other research teams.”[5]

OpenAI dispersed the broader science initiative’s employees across product, research and infrastructure teams. Separately, it was sunsetting Prism and moving its roughly ten-person team under Codex head Thibault Sottiaux, with the aim of incorporating Prism’s capabilities into the desktop Codex app. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed those changes to WIRED.[5]
