Dev Writers Retreat 2025

A San Diego edition of the developer writing retreat series, combining structured instruction, focused writing time and sponsor-supported fellowships.

Dev Writers Retreat 2025, titled “WRITING FOR HUMANS,” was the announced San Diego return of the developer writing retreat first held in Miami in November 2022. Presented by Latent.Space and hosted by swyx and Kaylin W, it was scheduled for December 7–11, immediately after NeurIPS. The organizers described it as a not-for-profit community effort led by swyx, with sponsor-supported accommodation and instruction offered free to selected attendees.[2]

Writing time and fellowships

The announced program spanned 4.5 days, from Sunday evening to Thursday afternoon. Mornings combined talks, guest speakers, hands-on workshops and collaborative brainstorming; afternoons were reserved for focused writing or remote work. Daily themes moved from goals and inspiration to topic selection and formats, editing and craftsmanship, marketing, and final reflections. The intended takeaway was a portfolio of up to five polished pieces.[2]

On November 28, 2025, Shawn swyx Wang advertised ten remaining fellowship spots to Latent.Space subscribers, describing a most-expenses-paid opportunity to reflect on 2025 and develop nonfiction writing skills. The event listing capped the planned group at 30 DevWriters to keep it focused on people serious about writing.[1][2]

The organizers described free accommodation and program instruction for selected attendees as a first for the retreat. Offered sponsorships ranged from $2,500 to $10,000, with benefits including speaking slots, developer-relations referrals and sponsored writing exercises. Event fees were designated for venue booking, organizing costs and writing-kit swag; these offers and capacity limits were plans rather than reported fundraising or attendance totals.[2]

The San Diego edition revived the morning-instruction, afternoon-writing format used in Miami three years earlier. That first retreat provides the organizing and curriculum context for the 2025 return.[2][3]

The 2022 Miami retreat

In his January 2, 2023 retrospective, swyx recalled recruiting Michelle, whom he credited with organizing React Miami that April, to co-organize the first DEV | WRITERS | RETREAT. They chose a date about three months ahead, before Thanksgiving. The five-day format ended with a graduation-day mass publishing event and an unconference where participants could share their work and lead discussions.[3]

Swyx took responsibility for workshop content, designing daily themes, prereadings and exercises. He said attendee interest prompted additional topics on AI writing, conference speaking and hiring virtual assistants. He attributed the exercises-and-readings repository to @Nutlope and credited his colleague Justin with volunteering to record the sessions. His account described opening with flash-writing exercises and later using interactive quizzes.[3]

Swyx reported a 22-person writing retreat and a 52-person unconference, with rough costs of $14,000 for venue and food and $2,000 for swag, signage, materials and organizer expenses. Tickets cost $500 for the full retreat and $100 for the unconference. He said ticket sales and sponsorships from Hashnode and Third Web covered most costs, and he paid the small shortfall. He identified the Miami Beach venue as a major driver of the ticket price and pressure to secure sponsors.[3]

The retrospective also identified practical shortcomings: late prereadings and community access, unclear expectations about writing projects, and requests for more structured afternoon peer review. Swyx said he had avoided assigned review buddies because he feared mismatches, and proposed an opt-in rotating arrangement. After reviewing survey responses and settling finances, he and Michelle remained interested in another retreat but could not yet commit to a Miami date. The separately announced 2025 edition brought the series back in San Diego.[3][2]
