Ali Rohde

Outset Capital cofounder and managing partner whose work spans AI-company operations, founder resources, and public conversations about AI.

Ali Rohde is a cofounder of early-stage venture fund Outset Capital and its managing partner, working alongside Kanjun Qiu and Josh Albrecht. She previously served as Chief of Staff at Sourceress and the AI research lab Generally Intelligent. Her contributions include helping founders manage a company shutdown, building an investor directory with Julian Shapiro, and participating in public AI discussions.[2][3][4][5][1]

Public conversations about AI

Rohde and Albrecht interviewed swyx for Thursday Nights in AI, a San Francisco meetup run by Imbue and Outset Capital. Their conversation appeared in Latent Space’s April 6, 2024 compilation.[1]

In the June 22, 2026 episode of Vibes & Benchmarks, Rohde discussed AI productivity with Albrecht. The episode’s transcript, which qualifies its speaker attribution as best-effort, attributes to her the observation that “writing more code, faster code, does not necessarily mean a better product.” She argued that productivity gains must translate into real value.[7]

Earlier career: entering startups and managing a shutdown

Before her venture and AI-community work, Rohde moved from political communications into startup operations. In her May 16, 2022 interview with Frederick Daso, she recalled entering the startup world with few connections. She searched for Chief of Staff and operations roles, set up job alerts, and supplemented formal applications with direct emails to founders. In interviews, she used concrete parallels between campaigns and early-stage startups: lean teams, fundraising pressure, and the need to expand activity quickly.[4]

Rohde joined Sourceress, which applied machine learning to recruiting, as Chief of Staff. She said she followed founders Kanjun Qiu and Josh Albrecht to their new AI research company, Generally Intelligent, after Sourceress closed. By the May 2022 interview, the same founders were her partners in building a venture capital fund.[4]

Rohde recalled helping the founders pivot and eventually shut down Sourceress. The work involved layoffs, cutting customer contracts short, and notifying investors. Together, they arranged for people to hear the news directly from the founders and ask questions, worked with lawyers and benefits providers on documents, severance, and insurance questions, and found a new office tenant. Her stated lesson was direct: “People need and deserve information and transparency.”[4]

That operating experience also informed Rohde’s advice to new Chiefs of Staff: understand the company before trying to change it. She recommended observing teams, talking with colleagues, learning the CEO’s preferences for updates and communication, and asking questions to test initial impressions. She credited Qiu and Albrecht’s long-term approach with helping her spend more time choosing consequential work rather than immediately reacting to whatever was urgent.[4]

Resources for founders and operators

Rohde and Julian Shapiro built VC Sheet to help early-stage founders find suitable investors. The directory organized investors by stage, location, and startup vertical, combining specific lists—such as investors that lead pre-seed rounds or focus on New York startups—with a broader database of funds and VCs. In March 2023 reporting, Rohde explained that maintaining a central repository made sense for investors who repeatedly fielded founders’ questions, while founders needed to identify relevant contacts and return to building.[5][6]

On March 31, 2023, Rohde announced VC Sheet’s Product Hunt launch and said she had spent months on the project. She used Ali Rohde Jobs, her newsletter sharing Chief of Staff, BizOps, and VC openings, to introduce it to readers. She also runs Outset Pod.[6][2]
