Addy Osmani

Engineering leader working on Claude Code, publisher of workflows for AI coding agents, and advocate for human responsibility in automated development.

Addy Osmani is a Member of Technical Staff at Anthropic working on Claude Code, following more than 14 years at Google leading developer experience. His AI work has covered coding agents, harnesses, evaluations, benchmarks and code quality.[3]

Coding agents and human responsibility

Osmani publishes agent-skills, a project that packages engineering workflows, quality gates and best practices for AI coding agents. Its skills are intended to make agents follow those practices consistently across development, with slash commands activating the relevant skills at each stage.[4]

The project's documented `/build auto` workflow makes a concrete distinction between autonomous implementation and verification. After the user approves a generated plan once, the agent implements its tasks without requiring the user to advance each step. Each task still follows a test-driven process and receives an individual commit; the workflow pauses on failures or risky steps. These are the project's documented operating rules, rather than measured results.[4]

In his September 9, 2026 essay “Own the Outer Loop”, Osmani places human agency outside the automated system: “The agency to decide, verify, approve, and own.” His framing assigns people responsibility for judgment and approval even as software performs more of the execution.[5]

Osmani also presented a keynote at AI Engineer World's Fair in 2026. Latent Space's July coverage described its subject as what AI engineers should continue doing as the cost of code generation trends toward zero.[2]

Before Anthropic, Osmani's Google work included Gemini's developer experience and a Director role running Google Cloud AI Developer Experience and Technical Evangelism. He helped launch Google's agent developer platform, alongside his work on agentic engineering and code quality.[3]

Earlier foundations: Chrome and web performance

Earlier in his Google career, Osmani led Chrome's Developer Experience, working on DevTools, Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals. That work provides historical context for his experience with developer tools before his focus shifted to AI.[3]

His earlier public teaching included “The cost of JavaScript” at PerfMatters Conference 2019. V8's June 25, 2019 publication identifies him as the presentation's speaker, documenting his work explaining web performance years before his current focus on coding agents.[6][3]
